Los buenos alumnos ESTUDIAR antes de un examen? Estudiar Imperfect or Preterite?

I just am having a hard time grasping imperfect vs. preterite -- and just don't quite understand it. Tell me the answer to the question above and if you have any tips.. feel free to share.
